The Liberty CCR is designed as a complete fault-tolerant closed-circuit rebreather. No single malfunction in the electronic system could cause a breakdown of the whole apparatus.
07. PLUG AND PLAY
- The Liberty CCR uses unique system of plug and play electronic components.
- All modules inside the rebreather's head are fixed in place by two or three Allen screws that can be easily removed.
- All components inside the head are designed to be field replaceable.
01. Air-Mass treatment
- Exhaled gas flows through counterlung to the scrubber canister.
- Passing through the radial scrubber design, carbon dioxide is removed.
- Then the gas flows through the sensor block into the inhalation counterlung.
- Using data from sensors on the inhalation side, control unit drives the solenoid valve to inject oxygen, in turn maintaining the precise oxygen level in the loop.
- Rebreather body is divided into two main parts: rebreather head and canister.
- Head comprises of control computers, sensors and gas addition valves.
- Canister holds small granules of sorbent (soda lime).
- Proper partial pressure of oxygen is measured by four chemical sensors.
- Oxygen is injected by two electronically controlled valves (solenoids).
- The control computers drive the solenoids according to the sensor data, precisely controlling the ppO2 in the loop.
02. Control System
- The Liberty CCR is controlled by two interlinked onboard computers.
- Each computer has its own battery, two oxygen sensors, depth sensors, pressure sensors, and a helium concentration sensor.
- Each computer (control unit) drives a separate electronic solenoid for oxygen addition.
- Both control units (CUs) share data from sensors and synchronize operations.
- In the event of a failure, one CU can drive all other operations for diver to end dive and return to surface.
- Two display units, head-up display and buddy display are connected to CU to display ppO2 read out.
- Head-up display (HUD) with three tri-color LEDs to display current partial pressure of oxygen in the breathing loop.
- Buddy display (BD) on unit head notifies dive partner of critically dangerous ppO2 levels.
03. MODULARITY
- Liberty Backplate works as the platform to support all components of the Liberty Rebreather.
- Liberty Head, Canister and cylinder first stages are attached to the unit backplate that is then attached to the unit stand to protect valves and serve to stand the unit on ground or donning stand.
- Ballast is created via cylinder pouches complete with “rip cords” for emergency jettison.
- Regulator first stages are attached to the backplate to maintain stable cylinder platform.
- Buoyancy compensator (BCD) comes in a “wing” or “donut” configuration, with volume carefully calculated to support even fully flooded unit.

05. EASY MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
- CCR Liberty can be divided into four main components: head, canister, backplate/wing and cylinders
- Most maintanence and repairs consist of an exchange of relevant compartments.
- The Liberty is designed to function as a modular apparatus, when one component fails, simply remove and replace component.
- Control unit software (firmware) can be easily updated by the user.
06. REDUNDANCY
- The Liberty CCR is designed to be fault-tolerant – no single malfunction in the electronics package can cause a breakdown of the entire system.
- The apparatus is designed and programmed to cope with any combination of malfunctions as long as at least one CU is still operable.
- If a cable is severed the CU will detect a short in the cable and disconnect the handset’s power supply.
- In the event both handsets are lost, the CU will regulate the oxygen supply according to the most recently selected setpoint.
